LENA MAYE INGREDIENTS GLOSSARY

We want to be transparent with our customers about the ingredients we use within our product formulas and why. The ingredients we use are carefully selected so that our formulas are gentle and beneficial for the hair and skin, as well as high performing.

There are so many different natural and beneficial ingredients that can be used within hair and skin care regimes/products. We have compiled an ingredients glossary based on the ingredients that are used within our current and future product formulas.

We have included the common name for the ingredients in bold and the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) terminology where applicable, next to it in brackets. INCI terminology is a system of names for certain ingredients based on scientific and other English and Latin words.Our ingredients glossary is not an exhaustive list and will be updated when required.

ALOE VERA (ALOE BARBADENSIS)

Aloe vera is an ingredient that is can be viewed as a real gift from nature, it is a major natural ingredient used in a lot of our product formulas due to its beneficial nature containing; Enzymes, sugars, minerals (calcium, chromium, copper, selenium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium and zinc), lignin, salicylic acid, sugars and amino acids as well as, vitamins A, C, E and B12, folic acid and choline.

Aloe vera is a fantastic all-rounder, it contains antiseptic agents and anti-inflammatory properties and also has high water content, making in beneficial when used on the hair and skin. Soothing and cooling aloe vera can hydrate, moisturise and rejuvenate both the hair and skin. It can also help to promote hair growth, increase elasticity, prevent itchy scalp, reduce dandruff whilst assisting in conditioning and detangling hair. It can treat burns, particularly sunburn, restore and offer nutrition.

Aloe vera’s pH is slightly acidic, near to that of the skin and scalp/ hair oil sebum’s natural pH, helping to maintain or restore pH balance for healthy hair and skin.

ARGAN OIL (ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL)

Argan oil is a natural ingredient that is rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. It works great as a moisturiser to soften the skin, easily absorbed argan oil will not leave the skin feeling greasy. It is a natural, non-irritating oil, making it ideal for all skin types. Perfect for everything from anti-ageing, acne, healing, scars and maintaining the skin’s elasticity.

Argan oil works as a fantastic hair treatment due to its vitamin E content. It is great for reducing split ends, moisturising the scalp, reducing dandruff and can help to make the hair softer and shiner whilst protecting it.

BEHENTRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE

Behentrimonium methosulfate derived from rapeseed, is a plant based mild emulsifier that helps to blend ingredients together. Used in hair and skin care products, behentrimonium methosulfate is a mild and effective ingredient known for its superior detangling, conditioning abilities, it helps to soften the hair and smooth out the cuticles.

BENZOIC ACID

Benzoic acid is a naturally occurring and synthetically produce substance used as a preservative in products.

CAPRYLOYL GLYCERIN/SEBACIC ACID COPOLYMER

A naturally derived ingredient made from coconut oil and castor oil that is used to replace silicones in product formulas – feel ingredient.

CARROT SEED OIL (DAUCUS CAROTA SATIVA)

Carrot seed oil is a natural ingredient that has great properties, full of vitamin A, vitamin E and beta carotene. Carrot oil can be used to rejuvenate, nourish and protect the skin whilst helping with anti-ageing, firming and toning. Carrot oil’s natural properties can work well with both dry and oily skin types.
The vitamins and beta carotene in carrot oil help to encourage new cells to grow, which in turn will stimulate hair growth. Using carrot oil can make hair softer and protect it from damage, helping it to grow healthier.

CETEARYL ALCOHOL

Cetearyl alcohol is great fatty alcohol made from vegetable sources such as coconut oil, it is used in products to soften and smooth the hair and skin. The ingredient cetearyl alcohol when used in a product formula, acts as emulsifier and emollient, providing texture and creating thickening effects. Cetearyl alcohol is used regularly used within products to assist with keeping the hair and skin healthy.

CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE

A rich conditioner used within our hair products formulas that reduces static, softens and detangles. This ingredient will greatly benefit the hair, it is especially effective at softening coarse hair.

CITRIC ACID

Made from citric fruits and juices, citric acid is added to hair and skin care products to heighten the acidity - pH adjuster.

COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE

Cocamidopropyl betaine is a mild and gentle surfactant derived from coconut oil with thickening, cleansing and foaming properties.

COCODIMONIUM HYDROXYPROPYL HYDROLYSED WHEAT PROTEIN

Intense conditioning agent used in our hair products to reduce frizz and improve the feel of the hair, also works as an antistatic agent.

Where a formula contains hydrolysed wheat protein, our ingredients suppliers have confirmed that it is considered gluten free being less than 20 parts per million (<20ppm). Hydrolysed wheat protein is made up of from the germ, therefore little or no gluten is extracted.

COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE

Cocamidopropyl betaine is a mild and gentle surfactant derived from coconut oil with thickening, cleansing and foaming properties.

COCONUT OIL (COCOS NUCIFERA OIL)

Coconut oil is an amazing all-rounder natural ingredient, which can be used on any skin type providing so many benefits to the skin and hair. Naturally antibacterial and antifungal, it is a great moisturiser and conditioner which can penetrates the hair and skin cells a lot more effectively than other oils.A fabulous emollient, it can also be used as a barrier cream and will help repair and restore skin and hair by being quickly absorbed. With Vitamin E, lauric and caprylic acid and essential amino acids, coconut oil is packed with nourishing goodness that softens and protects the hair and skin.

DECYL GLUCOSIDE

Derived from plants, decyl glucoside is a glucose based mild surfactant used in formulas to gently cleanse.

DEHYDROACETIC ACID

Dehydroacetic acid is an organic compound that is added to products to preserve the formula.                                    It works by killing off microorganisms that would normally encourage a product to decay.

DICETYLDIMONIUM CHLORIDE

Dicetyldimonium chloride is an ingredient that is added to hair products as it has deeply conditioning and anti-static properties.

DIHEPTYL SUCCINATE

A natural alternative to silicone that is used to enhance emollient textures – feel ingredient.

ERYTHRITOL

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol. Within hair care product formulas, erythritol can assist with smoothing, reducing frizz and moisturising.

GLYCERINE

Cocamidopropyl We use only vegetable glycerine in our products. Glycerine is a very good humectant, it is used in combination with other ingredients in our products to condition, moisturise and soften the hair and skin.betaine is a mild and gentle surfactant derived from coconut oil with thickening, cleansing and foaming properties.

GLYCERYL STEARATE

Derived from vegetable oil, soy oil and palm kernel, glyceryl stearate is used as a natural emulsifier.

COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE

Cocamidopropyl betaine is a mild and gentle surfactant derived from coconut oil with thickening, cleansing and foaming properties.

HIBISCUS (HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA)

Hibiscus is beautiful flower with some powerful uses for the hair and skin care. Hibiscus is one of the most renowned herbs used for hair growth, assisting with gaining stronger and thicker hair. Promoting healthy hair growth, hibiscus can helps restore the natural barrier to the hair, improve shine and sheen and condition the hair, preventing dryness, frizz, and breakage.

The natural acids hibiscus contain help to purify the skin, assist with removing dead skin cells whilst also boosting cell turnover. Rich in Antioxidants and vitamin C, hibiscus can help with gaining and maintaining healthy skin.

HORSETAIL (EQUISETUM ARVENSE)

A natural herb that contains silica, horsetail is great for strengthening the hair and healthy growth. Horsetail can improve the curl retention of the hair, the elasticity as well as improve shine and manageability.

HYDROLYSED CORN PROTEIN

Hydrolysed corn protein is derived from corn, it benefits hair, especially damaged hair, as it can help strengthen, repair and minimise damage.

HYDROLYSED SILK PROTEIN

Hydrolysed silk protein is a natural protein obtained from natural silk. It has excellent moisture binding properties and is an ingredients added to our hair formulas to help the repair of the hair and also improve feel and manageability.  Hydrolysed silk protein can improve the hair’s elasticity and increase shine.

HYDROLYSED SOY PROTEIN

Hydrolysed soy protein derived from soy, assists with strengthening hair, helping to repair damaged hair and improve texture whilst smoothing and adding shine.

HYDROLYSED QUINOA EXTRACT

Hydrolysed quinoa extract is a unique molecular weight amino acid that offers enhanced penetration for hair nourishment, helping to give greater hydration, repair and shine. It can assist in making styling of the hair easier and improving the volume and body of the hair.

HYDROLYSED WHEAT PROTEIN

Hydrolysed wheat protein is derived from wheat germ. It can assist with repairing the hair, thickening, smoothing and assisting with manageability.

HYDROXYETHY-
LCELLULOSE

Derived from vegetable cellulose and used as a thickener and gelling agent in products –    feel ingredient.

JOJOBA OIL (SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS SEED OIL)

Jojoba oil obtained by pressing the jojoba seeds, is rich in vitamins E and B-complex, it also contains copper, selenium, chromium, zinc and iodine, all of which are nature’s gifts to skincare and hair care.

Jojoba oil is a multi purpose golden oil that is really classified as a wax. It can provide help with dry skin, dry hair and dry scalps. Great for moisturising the scalp, reducing dandruff, jojoba oil is a great form of nourishment for hair and will strengthen it as it can actually penetrate the hair.

Jojoba oil is very similar to sebum, which is the natural oil the body produces that lubricates and protects the skin and hair, making it perfectly beneficial for any skin and hair type.

LEMON PEEL OIL (CITRUS LIMON PEEL OIL)

Lemon peel oil is a refreshing, natural fragrant oil that can act as an astringent and antibacterial ingredient due to the properties it contains. High in vitamin C, it also has potassium, fibre, magnesium, folate, beta carotene and calcium.

Lemon peel oil it is great for uplifting the skin and helping to balance oily complexions. Also great for helping to treat and prevent acne, the citric acid content in lemon peel oil will cleanse and brighten the skin, remove dead skin and stimulate new skin growth helping to regain smoothness and softness.
When used on the scalp it can help stimulate it to encourage growth and also assist in balancing and controlling the natural pH of the hair and scalp.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT (ALTHAEA OFFICINALIS)

Marshmallow root is a natural ingredient that has a high starch content and mucilaginous content. Marshmallow root helps to soften and moisturise the skin and hair. Especially beneficial for dry skin, marshmallow root can also reduce skin conditions that are irritated. The slippery substance that is gained from marshmallow root can be used to condition and detangle the hair and it can be particularly beneficial to hair that is dry or damaged.

OLIVE OIL (OLEA EUROPAEA FRUIT OIL)

Olive oil can provide nourishment to the hair and skin, especially dry types.Olive Oil is a natural ingredient that can boost hair growth and encourage thickness, whilst repairing damaged hair, preventing dandruff and other scalp issues.

Vitamins included in olive oil include A, E, D and K. It also contains beneficial fatty acids and is high in antioxidant properties whilst offers some antibacterial properties, which are all beneficial within hair and skin care regimes.

ORANGE PEEL OIL (CITRUS AURANTIUM DULCIS OIL)

Orange Peel Oil is a natural fragrance oil that is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, making it perfect for looking after the skin and hair. This oil offers so many benefits that include the ability to absorb vitamin C, which boosts collagen production and blood flow.

Great for anti-ageing, it also prevents skin getting too oily or too dry. If scalp problems are present, orange peel oil can help to remedy them, as well as reduce dandruff.

Offering a higher level of vitamin C than the flesh of the orange, orange peel oil is a great way to get this vitamin into the skin, not to mention it also comes with a divine smell.

PEG-100 STEARATE

PEG-100 stearate is used as an emulsifier and thickening agent in hair and skin care products.

PEG-150 DISTEARATE

PEG-150 distearate is used as an emulsifier and thickening agent in hair and skin care products.

PHENOXYETHANOL

Used as a natural preservative and stabiliser used within hair and skin products.

PURIFIED WATER (AQUA)

Purified water is the purest way to mix ingredients in a formula.

Most of the products we formulate and produce are water based, helping to hydrate and moisturise the hair and skin.

ROSEMARY LEAF OIL (ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS LEAF OIL)

Rosemary oil has a wealth of benefits that work well for hair and skin conditions. It can protect skin cells from damage that can be caused by the sun, as a natural antiseptic, it will disinfect unwanted bacteria from the hair and skin.

Rosemary oil is an essential oil that is known for hair care benefits such as; stopping and preventing premature grey hair, as well as stimulating the follicles to promote a healthy scalp and hair growth.  Rosemary oil has many properties including vitamin A and C, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc.

TRIMETHYLOLPROPANE TRICAPRYLATE / TRICAPRATE

Used as an emollient in hair and skin care products – feel ingredient.

VITAMIN B5 (PANTHENOL)

It is used as a moisturiser in products to keep skin soft, smooth and healthy. It is also used to help repair hair that is damaged and works by making hair more elastic and able to retain more moisture. When it is applied to the hair it turns into pantothenic acid and can improve it by coating it, sealing the shaft, whilst providing shine and smoothness.

VITAMIN E (TOCOPHEROL ACETATE)

Tocopherol acetate is a form of vitamin E that is added to products to help condition the skin, it can also help to promote a healthy scalp and healthy hair growth and works as an antioxidant, repairing and preventing damage.
